Principal Piccolo, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
Stephanie C. Mortimore is one of America’s leading piccolo specialists and serves as Principal Piccolo of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, one of the world’s most prestigious opera ensembles.
An acclaimed orchestral musician, soloist, and educator, Mortimore has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra on numerous international broadcasts and recordings and can be heard on three Grammy Award-winning recordings with the ensemble. Her distinguished career has been recognized with first prizes in the Myrna Brown Competition, the James Pappoutsakis Competition, and the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation Competition.
As a soloist, Mortimore has appeared with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and has championed contemporary music, including the world premiere of Daniel Felsenfeld’s Double Piccolo Concerto. She is also a frequent recitalist and masterclass presenter, having performed and taught throughout the United States.
An active orchestral and festival musician, she performs regularly with the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson, Wyoming. Her teaching and artistic activities have brought her to audiences and students in New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and beyond.
Mortimore earned her Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory and her Bachelor of Music degree from DePaul University. She also pursued advanced studies at the Conservatoire de Genève in Switzerland. Her principal teachers include Geralyn Coticone, Paula Robison, Fenwick Smith, Mary Stolper, and Keith Underwood.
Recognized for her artistry, technical brilliance, and expressive musicianship, Stephanie Mortimore is among the most respected piccolo performers and teachers of her generation.
