Internationally acclaimed flutist Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, Principal Flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been awarded Performer of the Year 2024 at the Global Flute Excellence Awards. This honor recognizes his extraordinary artistry, technical mastery, and profound musical expression, as well as his significant contributions to the flute world.
The Global Flute Excellence Awards celebrate exceptional achievements across the international flute community. Höskuldsson’s recognition in 2024 reflects his inspiring performances worldwide, his dedication to expanding the flute repertoire, and his role in premiering important new works — most notably the recent premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s new flute concerto.
A native of Iceland, Höskuldsson has earned international praise for the warmth, agility, and expressive depth of his playing. His distinguished career includes serving as Principal Flute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Since 2009, he has performed exclusively on an Emanuel Flute, an instrument whose craftsmanship and tonal beauty have been an integral part of his musical voice.
The Judges Panel consisted of 52 distinguished individuals representing 19 countries, showcasing the global diversity and expertise of the flute community.
The results were officially announced on Flute Almanac and across all social media platforms on January 10, 2025, with messages of congratulations shared by leading figures of the international flute community, including Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway, Honorary Chairs and Patrons of the Awards; Marco Gaudino, Chair of the Judging Panel; and Yulia Berry, Founder of Flute Almanac and Host of the Awards.
This award affirms Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson’s place among the world’s most exceptional flute artists — a musician whose performances continue to inspire audiences, advance the instrument’s legacy, and set a gold standard for excellence in flute performance.
