Emanuel Flutes Congratulates Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson on the World Premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s Flute Concerto No. 2

On March 21, 2024, I had the great privilege of witnessing Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson premiere Lowell Liebermann’s Flute Concerto No. 2 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Susanna Mälkki, at Symphony Center in Chicago.

This concerto was commissioned by the CSO and dedicated to Stefán — a fitting tribute to an artist whose artistry, technical mastery, and musical integrity have earned him the respect of audiences and colleagues worldwide.

The performance was nothing short of extraordinary. The Flute Examiner captured it perfectly:

“Höskuldsson’s commitment to color, phrasing, and mastery of the flute is unparalleled.”

The Chicago Classical Review likewise recognized the event’s significance:

“Few CSO premieres receive the kind of tumultuous cheers and extended ovations as did Liebermann’s concerto Thursday night.”

For me, as the maker of the flute that gave voice to this premiere, it was a deeply moving experience. Since 2009, Stefán has performed exclusively on an Emanuel Flute, and in this concerto, I heard that instrument’s full potential realized in his hands — the seamless blend of tonal depth, agility, and color that the concerto demanded.

It is rare for a new concerto to enter the repertoire with such an immediate and powerful impact. This premiere was not just a performance; it was a moment in flute history — one that combined the vision of the composer, the artistry of the soloist, the support of one of the world’s great orchestras, and the craftsmanship of an instrument built entirely by hand.

I congratulate Stefán on this remarkable achievement and am proud that the sound of an Emanuel Flute was part of such a historic occasion.
